yea its not actually 'necessary'. The usb cable it comes with works fine anyway. Its just a convenience.

That said, I do think at $240 it would have been nice for them to throw in both a cover and an ac adapter, when competing readers are half the price (nook, kindle, etc).

Although to their credit they did throw in the cover, with the ongoing promotion of the free lighted cover.
