I nominate The Time Machine by HG Wells.

I believe that this was the first English language science fiction novel, and it still holds up today. It created a genre of fiction - time travelling. Written in the 1890s, it deals with issues such as class warfare that in the author's view are timeless. Yet it is an exciting adventure story more than a political tract.
