Sounds like your son will be getting one anyway, so either give him the Nook or sell it and get him a K3.
The upside to the Nook is it's ability to check out library books; the Kindle can't do that.
The downside is that neither device can read the other device's books. So if your tastes overlap, you'll either have to exchange readers or buy the book twice.
Two Kindles can share the same account and thus, all books on that account. Likewise, two Nooks can do the same.
PS: don't open it until after B&N makes its big announcement next Tuesday. That might affect your decision.
