You absolutely can shut the device off - just press the power button for 3 seconds or more and it will turn right off.
In regards to the battery life - we did some additional testing both with the Kobo Wireless Reader and the original Kobo Reader. It turns out the difference of letting the device sleep versus turning it off is much smaller than we had originally understood.
We've left it in your hands - if you want to turn it off, turn it off. If not, it'll happily dream of the next time you want to read in sleep mode.
