Yes, that was Amazon CS's theory. But if true, it was not due to impatience on my part. When the Kindle exited USB mode, it was already locked up, before anything could be done with the update file (corrupted or not). Because it was locked up, I could not restart normally, and because it would no longer boot up, there was no way to remove the update file short of a system reset. I never saw the usual update messages, so it is not clear it was even attempting to apply the update.
