Others disagreee quite strongly, but I don't see a lot of use for publishers any more. Nothing they do can't be outsourced for a flat fee rather than the 90% of the profits that publishers would demand. Musicians realised this over 30 years ago, it's time writers did the same.

I don't see anything wrong with that if it means free (legal) content. Paperbacks in the 1950s often had adverts in them. When you buy something from Amazon or Ebay you are bombarded with adverts for "similar" products anyway, I don't see how it would be any different to that.
