The option is still there - it's just a one more step away. When in your BOOKS library, press the Menu button, and pick Display. The same option in the 1.4 option is there.

You can also use the delete option to remove these books permanently if you want the space back.

I see this as an improvement as it allows you to continue to use your device while charging it. This was a big ask from previous customers (and will be in the Kobo 1 update coming soon). Let us know if you disagree.
