I use my 650 in the kitchen all the time. As far as splashing and staining, I leave the Reader on the table as I cook on the counter. If it's a fairly involved recipe, I have been known to make a jpg of the recipe file and set it in my screensaver folder for when it times out.
I also have all my recipes and cookbooks loaded so that I can check the ingredients when I'm out and about. (The notes application is also great for recipes and ingredients).
