The Kindle is the only e-reader with TTS. And while the keyboard might not look pretty, it is great for taking notes.

Sony's selection is not that great but you can buy EPub books from other sources and put them on the SOny.

There are a ton of other choices. I would say the two other major brands in play are the Nook and the Kobo. I will let their owners speak for those devices.

I will say that I would not buy a device without 3G or WiFi. It might not be something that you think you will use but once you start using it you will love it. It is great being able to download a book while sitting at the airport or away from a computer.

The Kindle does a great job with taking notes, highlighting, and the dictionary.
