I think it's really sweet that you're not only considering it, but taking the time to ask what folks think about it. That's showing a lot of care and thought going into the decision, and that's what gift-giving is all about.

And after that sentimental moment, I'll share this anecdote. First-ever birthday gift I got my husband (then-boyfriend): a basketball. Um, yeah. Am I a particularly athletic lady? No, I'm your basic nerdy nose-in-a-book last-picked-for-every-team type girl. His reasoning? "Well, you like basketball!" Sure, my college team, on TV...sigh.

Hey, maybe I could show him this thread...

Well show him the part where I live in fear of my wife. I hinted around about the eBook idea to her and she said she just doesn't understand why anyone would want an ebook reader. It looks like another 'Safe Gift' Christmas for her!

The sad part of this story is, I took my 17 YO daughter with me to buy the stero speakers. I had assumed she would watch my back and not let me buy something stupid.

But we were laughing about it a year or two later, and my daughter said she knew it was a lousy Christmas gift. I asked her WHY she would let me buy them! She said she was a kid at the time, it wasn't HER place to keep her parents out of trouble. I'm not sure propagation of the race should be a primary goal anymore.
