Z-code is the primary language used for Interactive Fiction (IF) games - perhaps more commonly known as "text adventure" games. In the early 1980s, such games were enormously popular on personal computers. The company which dominated the genre was Infocom, which produced some 30 or so IF games.

Z-code is an interpreted, LISP-like language, which is highly portable, and hence ideal for hand-held devices. Z-code interpreters are available for pretty much every mobile platform, as well as desktop PCs.
