One recommendation I've made to people attempting Joyce: if it seems difficult, try reading it aloud. Joyce's primary sense seems to have been hearing, and he was in part trying to reproduce what he heard on his legendary walks through Dublin.

Reading aloud will produce a fuller sense of the rhythm and cadence, a better feel for what Joyce was hearing, and a better appreciation of the prose.
