I'm aware of the limitations. The fact that it's cheap is it's number one drawing point for me. Maybe a 2nd hand PocketPC or PalmPilot would be an option?
I've used those intensively.
Tons of apps, office oriented, TTS and so on.
You easily should get one in your price range.
