Actually you don't have to start from absolute scratch on Nov. 1st. Many participants do at least some prep work in the month prior to the start of NaNo so that they have some idea of what they want to write about. It's just that you aren't supposed to write the actual text of the story til Nov. 1st comes round. I don't think you need a lifetime of experience either. Just that life experience that the average person has. The ages range from teens on up to grandparents and anywhere in between.
