Proofing, alas, is one of those things that increasingly
isn't done in attempts to cut costs. A friend used to be VP at an editorial production hose that provided such services to customers, and lamented on a list we were both on about how much is wasn't being done these days. Another list member, who was an editor at a major house, said "But such things are part of the basic budget for the book, and are
always done!" "Maybe in
your house,", was the reply, "but I'm the one who gets to deal with clients who used to pay us to do it and don't anymore!"
