Oddly enough, it's taken nearly 50 years for Gorilla Glass to find a commercial use. Corning developed it way back in 1962, but it wasn't until 2008 that somebody realized that easily-scratched or broken glass capacitive touch screens would be a perfect match for Gorilla Glass' toughness. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorilla...#Gorilla_Glass

Sometimes you have a problem that needs a solution. Other times, you have a solution that just needs a problem. Gorilla Glass was the latter.
