If you are the type to go find a quiet place specifically to be free of distraction, then you can certainly avoid distracting yourself when reading on an iPad. That would extend to a dead tree book as well surely?

My personal choice was a device that allows me to read with out the INBUILT distractions of messaging, email, games and phone calls. Those functions are delegated to my smart phone which resides on the dressing table in our bedroom so it specifically cannot distract me from afar.

I can then concentrate on reading on my single purpose device with the only distraction being a hot/cold drink or my bride sitting next to me.
