There are file formats and ebook formats and there are various DRM scams that can be
applied to ebooks. Most of the DRM scams are associated to a particular ebook format
or two, but theoretically the DRM scam could be used to infect any format.
All the file and ebook formats that have DRM applied to their commercial offerings, also
can exist without a DRM infection. The format does not require DRM, except perhaps
for the Kindle Topaz formated files.
The .epub is an open standards supported format that does a pretty good job as an
ebook format, in terms of its ability to provide a good reading experience, while also
providing a compressed file for storage. It is essentially an HTML folder, zipped into
a single file.
The ePub format is more likely the future, and a good deal of the present, while
.mobi/.prc and the Palm .pdb are more the past (although there are still plenty of
ebooks formatted for those two old time formats).
Luck;
