It's not obvious to me if your intention is to read your downloads solely on your computer, which is something I don't do.

For my jetBook Lite, I download public domain books in either mobi or ePub, copy them to my SD card, and insert the card into the jetBook Lite (which reads both formats).

No one can predict the future of eBooks with certainty, but it looks like mobi and ePub are the safest bets for now.
