My reference was not to the Reader (I agree with you that they are not sealed) but to hard disk drives which are sealed. Once, long ago and far away, the platters of a hard disk (like the RPO-9s of the mainframe era) were exposed and you had to be very careful around them. Today's units are sealed from the factory and unless you open them or remove the seals they are not exposed to the elements.
