Jon -- it's not "unfair" ... it's a business decision. Where a book is sold, in what format, with or without DRM, and at what price it is sold ... these are decisions made by authors, agents, publishers and vendors.

And readers can make decisions too: buy this or that, shop here or there, and vote with one's dollars. Is it "unfair" to Amazon if I buy something at Kobo for $9 that might be available at Amazon for $8 because I prefer the ePub format?

You can buy the series at kobobooks for CAN$4.09 each ... and enjoy the first one free from the author's site as per the OP link. That makes all three books average $2.72.
