I think I see them at Airports more than anywhere else because at an airport, just about everyone carries a laptop bag or other bag that has room for a reader.

Both my K2 and my K3 fit in my purse, which is a fairly small "messenger" style bag. The bag is only slightly larger than my Daytimer organizer (so it's reasonably small). I have ongoing medical issues and I always bring my Kindle with me to my doctor's office. I had to go to the E.R. recently and I also brought it with me then.
I can imagine men would be less likely to carry them "in the wild" unless they have a laptop bag with them, but I don't see any reason why women wouldn't.
Edit: I've never seen an e-reader in public, nor an iPad. But, I'm rather shy in person and I tend to stay out of places with big crowds.
