Although I read most my stuff on my Kindle DXG, in a pinch, I've read a few books on small 2 1/2- 3 inch lcd mp3 player/readers and they are pretty good in a very dark room if you can select black-on-white mode (black background, white letters) and are able to turn the screen brightness down.
Great for a bit of bedside reading.
