I believe Australians are proud to be on something that is both an island and a continent.

To be fair, Australia is HUGE. It has pretty much the same landmass as the United States. Calling it an island (in anything but the most technical sense) disregards its vast size. It really is a continent.

However, I'm not Australian myself, so I can't speak with any real authority on what the locals might think.
