I also buy audible.com audio books. Currently, I listen to them on my iPod touch. Kindle has support for them, Nook does not.
Nook has a easily replaceable battery in case of permanent battery death. Kindle I read you have to send it in (yes, supposedly you CAN replace the battery yourself, but I am not that technology advanced and not sure if I could trust myself to be able to do this, plus, I'd be afraid of damaging the device).
Can you see my dilemma?

Nope.
I had the K1 with the SD slot and replaceable battery. I used them exactly 0 times in 18 months. My K1 battery is still chugging along just fine. I don't use it all tha tmuch now because I have a DXG.
The life cycle on the batteries in my DXG and in the K3 is suppose to be something like 5 years. My money is on people buying a new version long before having to worry about replacing the battery. I don't worry about the battery with my IPod's, I am not worried about it with my DXG.
There are plenty of free books available for the Kindle, some here, some at Amazon, some at other locations. There are posters here and at other sites who claim that they have yet to play for a book on their Kindles. I am sure there are Nook owners who can say the same thing.
To be honest with you, I wouldn't be worried about the audio books. You have a device for listening to them that works pretty well. It probably works better then whatever is on the Nook or the Kindle.
