I listen to *a lot* of audiobooks. I've been an Audible member since 2001 and own a large number of audiobooks. I only listen to audibooks on my iPod (I think it's a better device for listening). Even on my iPod, I don't store all the audiobooks I own (not even the iPod could hold them all

). Only the 1-3 at a time and then I delete them for the next batch. If one is getting audiobooks from the library, I don't think space on the nook or the Kindle is really going to be an issue because one can only borrow so many at a time. So IMO, and SD card slot is not "key" to listening to audiobooks.
