Actually, my office neighbor came in this morning talking about hedgehogs. Told me the technique used when X-raying one. (He spends waaayyyy more on his pets than I can afford to). I guess the quills show up sorta like bones in an X-ray, and you need to move them out of the way.
You apparently brush all the quills up & center, like a mohawk. And secure them there with a beautician's hair clip. The hedgehog is anesthetized, otherwise he would object to this indignity.
