It's working as it should. The "power off" in that hack is a hard shutdown of the reader. It puts it in the same state as if you pressed the reset button and didn't power it up.

This "power off" mode is probably only useful for storing your reader for a long period of time without running down the battery.

The normal power switch just puts the reader in to a standby mode that turns back on quickly, but pulls a surprising amount of power.

For example, I kept a reader sitting on the shelf in the "power off" mode for about a month and it still showed four bars of power when turned off. If it was in the normal standby mode that battery would probably have been dead.
