Probably fairy_dreams and jphphotography have the easiest solution - just memorize what letter is associated with what number, but a nicely designed overlay would be nice.

I don't have my Kindle yet - is there room above the top line of letters to put some sort of ...very small...line of numbers to identify the associated letter?

Excuse my ignorance, but why is using a laser cutter to etch the numbers a bad idea? Would this damage the eReader? I know if I was the one doing the etching I could make a pretty big mess of it, but if someone with skill and a steady hand did the etching, why not?
