You might also try deleting a book and then putting it back, which is also something I have done. That seems like it would cause some possible corruption.
Intriguing.....

I just inserted an SD card with no books on it; turned the Kobo on, left it at the home screen and the unit NEVER went into any power saving mode....

UPDATE:

Card is a 1 GB card which I just reformatted to ensure it was FAT32. Currently has nothing on it, and after 45 minutes on the home screen, unit is still powered on.

Removing the card resulted in the unit powering off as expected.

Next step: add an ePub to it and see what happens
