For many of us the choice of Smashwords is not about the formating (I would rather format by hand, providing a good set of tools) but the easy access to their distribution channels. It is the best way for writers to get into Sony, Diesel, B&N, Borders, Kobo, iBooks, and hopefully soon Amazon.
By the way, traditional publishers I've dealt with who accept online submissions have either asked for manuscripts in .doc or .rtf.
