You can get the lighted cover. Turn it on when you need it, slide it out of the way when you don't. Powered by the Kindle, so no extra batteries (with their weight).

All the "lighted screen" e-ink devices have a layer of glass as well -- and I really don't link the way that increases glare and decreases readability (to say nothing of the constant smudges from the touch screen).
