With some limitations, there is something you can do. What I do is:
-use folders [one-level only] for the books, as you wish them to be
-start collection manager;
-remove all current collections [the screen on the right ]
-add all folders [drag them from left to right]
-commit changes.
This needs to be done each time new books are added [in general, it is enough to do it only for the folders that were changed]
This helps in that it needs as many operations as the number of collections, instead of as many as the number of books.
The limitation is that a book can belong to many collections, but with the folder method you can only add it to one collection.
However, I find quite helpful.
Of course, the best would be to implement drag-and-drop and multiple select in the software; but it seems its author has moved on, or is on a long vacation.
It's amazing to me how stupid Amazon implemented it. It's just a marketing ploy - they 'have it', so you can buy your kindle; once you do that, you find it unusable. And you find a closed ear on their kindl[e-]y advertised feedback email.
