At the other stores, you "buy" a free book before you download it (well, except for Smashwords; the don't have any way to "keep" a free book in your library). But, at Kobo, you can just click on "download epub" and have the copy on your computer, but never add it to your Library/Account at Kobo. Underneath the cover of the book, however, you'll see some small text that says "add to library". You'll need to sign in first (so you do need an account at Kobo). Click on that text and it changes to "this book has been added to your library" (or something close to that, since I'm writing from memory). From then on, you can access your Library at Kobo anytime and see that title. You'll be able to re-download it from any computer and if you have the Kobo App, it shows in your archives there (just like books bought in the B&N store show in your B&N library on the nook or in the nook apps). That way, if your computer crashes, the file becomes corrupt or you accidentally delete it, you can always get another copy. If you skip this step (and I did on a few before I figured it out), once the book goes back up in price, you'll lose access to downloads without buying it (at whatever the new price is).

Did that clear it up?
