You can get a 4 GB card for $10.
I can understand battery life being something of an issue, but I doubt any company (besides Amazon) is really going to try that hard to get the battery life in practical usage to be more than 2 weeks.
So a new Black Kobo with an 4GB SD card is the same price as the Nook. It probably has a battery life as long as you are likely to see anywhere other than the Kindle (even assuming the Kindle really gets a significantly better battery life) and it can read library books.
