That's what I would say too Tom. Sorry OP. The easiest answer I can see for you is to get somebody to assist you in liberating the books of DRM and just storing them on your own computer.
They will of course be readable on your current Kindle for as long as that Kindle is operational ... even if you deregister from the Amazon account and re-register on a new account, unless you delete the file from the Kindle it doesn't matter the books will be readable. As long as you have a copy of the file, you can read the book on the Kindle. Your biggest problem will be when that Kindle goes kaput on you, and they all do eventually. You won't be able to read that specific file on a new device.
You can attempt to contact Amazon, but I have never heard of anybody being successful in getting them to move books to a new Amazon account - and certainly not without bringing your ex into the picture to get his permission.
