As I understand it, if she deregisters it and registers it to a new account the books already on her Kindle will still be there and readable, but she'll never be re-download them. So the books will last the life of her current Kindle, but no longer.

Is there a better way to go about it, that hopefully does not involve getting in touch with him again?
A couple of options:

Firstly, download the books to a PC and strip the DRM off, then back them up. Disadvantage: illegal, and she needs to be reasonably computer literate.

Secondly: contact guy and get him to create a new acccount too. Keep the old account that they both can re-register too when they need to download old books. Disadvantage: she needs to get back in touch with him, and get him to agree to this hassle of a plan that has no advantages for him.

Hope this helps!
