Kindle couple breaks up - is there a way to divide the purchased books?

Guy reads on iPhone. Girl reads on Kindle she got as a gift from guy - REGISTERED TO HIS ACCOUNT. He buys thrillers and a few computer books. She buys (and downloads when they're free) historical novels and the occasional travel book. They couldn't care less about each other's books - but they're on the same account.

Fast forward a year. He's gone - but the device is still registered to him. If she buys books through the device, they'll go on his account and he'll pay for them. Obviously not what she wants. But if she deregisters her device and registers it to her own account, won't she lose all her books?

Is there a better way to go about it, that hopefully does not involve getting in touch with him again?

How simple life was only a decade ago...
