Also, please post the smallest testcase you can (ie. an epub with a gif that causes the problem on your machine and the steps to reproduce it).
I would be happy to see if the same thing happens on my Snow Leopard machine and if so, I can fire up gdb and see if I can see what is going on.
No promises but if it is something obvious, then a work-around to get you going again should be possible.
