Maybe "back to the roots" might solve your problems.
The former Pocket PCs/Palm Pilots/.... still are good enough (in my opinion) and you can find extremely low prices for those in eBay. They are slightly bigger than todays mobile phones, but way smaller than any 5" ePaper reader.
