If you set the Sony Plug in to Author, Series, it creates a Collection for each Author Name, as well as for each Series.
So it already creates Collections based on Author. But in the Series Collection, it orders by Series Number, and in Author it ONLY orders alphabetically.
So Calbre CAN order the books in a collection based on some criteria, is it just that, at this time, there is no option to set this order in Calibre.
