A few times it dropped as low as -27. When you are young you don't pay much attention to it though

Actually, no. Not at all.
In fact my English teacher has despaired to teach me the difference between wantS and bottleS. I remember she would give me a text, show every other word with s at the end and ask me whether it is a noun or a verb...
