When you use web service to collect metadata, often you end up with lots of tags, more than the books in the library themselves. What would be useful is to merge multiple tags into one more general one, for example:

Computer Science
Computer: Languages

...
Computer: Desktop Applications

These could all be merged into "Computer Science", meaning that all books with the others will take the first one and the others tag will be deleted.
This may work for you with a careful application of Eyeball Mk I

In the Tag Browser, Right-click the tag name, select rename.
It does not matter if the new name already exists, the Calibre crew though of everything and consolidates them properly
