The other option I looked at was dual lock tape which is strong enough for industrial applications, but it's quite expensive, so I thought I'd try the velcro dots first. I got the dots from a hardware store and they have a very thick adhesive backing like glue, unlike the ones from the office supplies store.

I just tried shaking the cover vigorously for several minutes with the reader facing downwards and it didn't show any signs of detaching, so I'm convinced it's secure.
