PRS-505 Battery life -- unexpectedly short

Hi! I just went on a six day road trip with my PRS-505. I managed to forget to take my USB cable -- not to worry, I thought, this thing's good for 7000 page turns, isn't it?

Not so fast: the battery ran down over the course of about 100 hours, giving me a "battery low" warning (and subsequent power off) after that time!

I noticed it discharging on the first day, so tried experimenting with the sleep mode -- no joy. I was keeping it in its case and switched off when not in use: again, this didn't seem to stop the battery drain.

Am I misusing it in some way, or is there actually a problem with this device's battery life? (I must say that if it's the latter, I'm deeply unimpressed -- I get better power saving from my old Palm TX when the device is switched off!)
