Not that I'm arguing the point, but just where was it brought up in
this thread? (Or did the writer edit it back out before I saw it?)
It's become an issue similar to the (former) use of the name "Palm Pilot" to refer to all PDAs, and the confusion that could cause when buying apps or trying to share data. Fortunately, "eReader" hasn't become as ubiquitous as "Palm Pilot," so it shouldn't be hard to break the habit, so to speak.
All you can do is get specific, i.e., refer to your Sony device as a "Sony Reader," the Iliad's an Iliad, etc, not just "an e-reader." In a pinch, say "e-book reader."
