I'm not sure if even an Oberon case would have protected your K3 in whatever incident caused that to break. It might be that between two hard, heavy books would be the safest place in that bag to store a Kindle.
I keep mine in the outside pocket of a messenger bag, in either a Belkin or Oberon case. I'm not particularly gentle, but I do make sure not to bend, twist, or let anything hard & heavy hit it. You probably just put the bag down the wrong way, and *CRACK*.
I'm curious what you'll do to replace it. Another K3? or maybe an iPad or iPod Touch?
One of the drawbacks to the thinness of the Kindle is that it is necessarily a bit more fragile than thicker devices.

Oh I don't know. I have had a K1 that has been dropped, in an Oberon case, more then once that is still alive and kicking. It has traveled with me and been tossed in back packs, in suitcases, in cars, had a dog sit on it...
I would say that it is a pretty sturdy little device. Like all electronics, it probabl depends on the angle that it was hit at for for screen to break.
