There is also the fact that Capt. Smith had briefly been in command of Titanic's sister ship and had had problems with it as well. He wasn't used to such a big ship as Titanic and her sister ships were. And the watertight compartments only went so far up so when the hull was compromised water would pour over one set of plates and begin filling the next compartment and the rest is history. And of course the last survivor of the sinking just died this last year (she had been a very young child) so there is no one left who was there who can say yes or no to what actually happened.
