Compartment syndrome is nothing to sneer at. If it advances too far, there can be permanent nerve damage and a chronic foot drop. We sent Basics home with it all the time when I was in the AF. They had to follow a strict regimen while home and then pass a physical when they came back. Shin splints are the first stage of the problem.
