I do not want a civil servant teaching religious values to my children. That is my job.
I DO want my children taught evolutionary theory. It is the theory that best explains the development of species that exists today. And as a Christian I see no conflict between the biblical account and the scientific theory. The Hebrew word translated as 'day' in English does not mean a 24 hour period - I see no religious reason to believe the Earth is only 7000 years old. And whether Adam was literally created from dust or he was simply the first of God's creations to be given the soul of a man after God had guided the evolutionary process is irrelevant to me. I believe that God created man, the method does not change the miracle.
Now would you like me, a fellow Christian, to be teaching religious values to your children? The differences between religious perceptions and doctrines even within Christianity is just more reason for government to stay out of teaching values and religion.
